EVEL KNIEVEL
Red, white and blue silk jumpsuit, signed on the base of the sewn number 1, accompanied by a photo of Knievel at the signing
Ephemera signed: "Evel Knievel". Red, white and blue silk jumpsuit, with a star-spangled number "1" sewn on the left breast. Signed at the bottom of the number in black felt tip. Robert Craig Knievel, born in 1938, was nicknamed "Evil" by a jail guard, a name he later changed to "Evel" to avoid offending religious persons. Reputedly a bank robber and safe-cracker in his youth, Knievel began daredevil stunts in 1965 to call attention to his motorcycle dealership. In 1973 he leaped 50 cars, stacked four deep, at the L.A. Coliseum. However, many of his stunts were unsuccessful, attracting fans anticipating a big smashup. Spectacular failures included an attempted leap of 150' over a fountain at Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas (1968), and a rocket and parachute-assisted leap at the Snake River, Idaho (1974). Even after retirement, he retained his penchant for bone breaking spills, falling from a golf cart and then a Jacuzzi. Ironically, Knievel's daredevil jumps almost killed him indirectly. He required a liver transplant (1999) to replace an organ ravaged by Hepatitis C, acquired from tainted blood received in one of his many surgeries. Fine condition.
