EVELYN VENABLE
Vintage photo of the actress who became a classics professor
Photograph signed: "Cordially,/Evelyn Venable", Sepia, 8x10.
Evelyn Venable (1913-1993) played second leads and strong supporting
roles in many major films of the early 1930s, including Death Takes a
Holiday with Fredric March (1934), The County Chairman with Will
Rogers and Alice Adams with Katharine Hepburn (both 1935). She was
Shirley Temple's mother in The Little Colonel that same year. Perhaps
too soft spoken to become a top-billed star, she appeared in mostly B- movies
late in her career. Married to cinematographer Hal Mohr from 1934, she retired
from acting a decade later to raise a family. In later years she taught Greek
and Latin at UCLA, producing plays in the Classics Department. Corners creased.
Lightly bowed. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso (no show-through). Otherwise,
fine condition.
