EVERETT ALVAREZ. Article signed: "Lcdr/Everett Alvarez", 1p, 15½x22½. Irregularly cut newspaper article from the November 14, 1973 issue of the Kingsville-Bishop (Texas) "Record-News" picturing Alvarez and his wife, headed: "POW speaks/of experiences/Pilot held in/captivity longest". Lt. Cdr. Alvarez was shot down and captured August 5, 1964 on the first raid in North Vietnam in retaliation for the North Vietnamese torpedo attack on the USS Destroyer Maddox and USS Turner Joy in the Gulf of Tonkin. Lt. Cdr. Alvarez was the first American airman captured in the Vietnam War and the longest held POW in North Vietnam. Released on February 12, 1973, Alvarez was a prisoner for 8½ years. Lightly creased. Worn, nicked edges. Folds, shaded at folds.
