EVERETT M. DIRKSEN
The U.S. Representative signs a letter to an associate in regards to
repaying Senator Roman Hruska for his aid in 1962
Typed letter signed: "Everett M. Dirksen", in blue ink, 1
page, 8x10½. December 2, 1963. Illinois. In full: "Dear Clarence: Your
letter fairly slays me and distresses me beyond words because on February 12 I
will be in Omaha, Nebraska to repay Senator Roman Hruska for all the things he
did for me in Illinois in 1962. I could think of nothing more delightful than to
be on hand when you honor our mutual friend, Jack McCarthy for if ever a citizen
in my time deserved it he does. I know, however, you will appreciate my dilemma.
Sincerely". Everett M. Dirksen (1896-1969) was U.S.
Representative (1933-1949) and U.S. Senator (1951 until his death in
1969) from Illinois. He was the Republican Whip from 1957-1959 and
Minority Leader from 1959-1969. As Minority Leader, Dirksen played a key
role in the passage of the Voting Rights Act (1965) and the Fair Housing Act
(1968).Tape on edges. Small notches from binding on right edge. Corners
