Eisenhower's Secretary of Agriculture sends a letter to the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Smith's Transfer & Storage Co. Inc., telling him of the splendid time he had with their group at the Laymen's Dinner.
Typed Letter signed: "Ezra T Benson", as Secretary of Agriculture, 1 page, 7x9. Washington, 1955 October 21. On letterhead of the Secretary of Agriculture addressed to Mr. Arthur Clarendon Smith, Sr, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Smith's Transfer & Storage Co., Inc. Washington, D.C. In full: "Dear Mr. Smith: Please be assured it was a great pleasure for me to be the guest of your group at the Laymen's Dinner. It was a splendid group of men and the message given was most uplifting. With best wishes, Faithfully yours," President Eisenhower'sSecretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson (1899-1994) was born in Whitney, Idaho. A graduate of Brigham Young University he received his masters degree from Iowa State University. He moved to Washington to become Executive Secretary of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives and while there became the first president of a new Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In 1943 he became a member of the churches Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; a governing body of the church's hierarchy, members of the group become president of the church in chronological order of membership. In 1953 Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Benson as his Secretary of Agriculture and he served both of Eisenhower's terms in the cabinet. In 1973 he became President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and in 1985 became President of the LDS church. Adhesive mounting residue at corners. Mailing fold at center.
