F. MARION CRAWFORD
Album leaf signed and dated by author F. Marion Crawford in
Manhattan, New York City in 1893
Signature: "F. Marion Crawford./Manhattan/Jan. 24. 1893.".
4¾x3 album leaf with rounded right edge. You probably couldn't accuse
American novelist Crawford (1854-1909, born Francis Marion Crawford in
Bagni de Lucca, Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Italy) of excessive realism in his
writing, and he'd probably thank you for it. His writing was known for its
vivid characterizations and settings, if not its depth, and drew heavily on his
travels to Italy and India. Probably his best known works are
Saracinesca (1887), Sant' Illario (1889) and Don Orsino
(1892), about social and economic change and how it affects an Italian family.
Crawford was also known for his exotic stories, such as his first novel
Mr. Isaacs (1882), set in India, and the frequently anthologized horror
stories The Upper Berth (1886), The Screaming Skull (1908) and the
vampire story For the Blood is the Life (1911). Lightly toned, soiled and
creased. Lightly discolored along edges. Otherwise in fine
condition.
