F. MARION CRAWFORD
Letter by author F. Marion Crawford, written "in haste" from Everett House in New York City to accept an invitation and thank the recipient for a book - which he hadn't time to read yet
Autograph letter signed: "F Marion Crawford", 1p, 4½x6¾, 1 sheet folded. Written from "Everett House." (probably in New York City), dated "Thursday AM". In full: "Dear [illegible] I have written to accept Mrs de Cordova's kind invitation Many thanks for the book, which, however, I have not yet had time to read,- life being rather shorter than usual just now. I will expect you on Friday about 6:15 - am off to the football game today. In haste - yours ever" You probably couldn't accuse American novelist Crawford (1854-1909) of excessive realism in his writing, and he'd probably thank you for it. His writing was known for its vivid characterizations and settings, if not its depth, and drew heavily on his travels to Italy and India. Probably his best known works are Saracinesca (1887), Sant' Illario (1889) and Don Orsino (1892), about social and economic change and how it affects an Italian family. Crawford was also known for his exotic stories, such as his first novel Mr. Isaacs (1882), set in India, and the frequently anthologized horror stories The Upper Berth (1886), The Screaming Skull (1908) and the vampire story For the Blood is the Life (1911). Lightly toned and creased. Adhesive residue on verso and along spine of letter. Otherwise, fine condition.
