FAITH BALDWIN
Long letter describing her new home, her everyday life, and her
forthcoming books
Typed Letter signed: "Faith Baldwin", 3 pages, 6x7½.
Norwalk, Connecticut. Accompanied by original mailing envelope addressed in
signer's hand. To John Fischbach, Phoenix, Arizona, in full: "We
have moved as you see; moved June 29th and are surrounded by working installing
a new heating system; this is a very small place compared to the one we sold,
about 10 rooms instead of 22 (in the main house there) 6 acres instead of 25.
But the children have all gone3; the 2 married are far away, Michigan and
Nashville; the younger boy works now after college graduation in New York, home
some weekends, my younger girl his twin, is living and working in Denver; so
their godmother and I are alone. I have only a short time to do mail, as I have
been ill with wicked poison ivy and am just back at desk and must go on with my
book & income tax. My serious book came out in Feb and has been for weeks a
modest best seller; the title is The Whole Armor; I wish you would read it; I am
nw writing another much harder and I fear it won't have the appeal; at year's
end I go back to magazine work. I have had a TV show since Jan., which is on the
American Broadcasting Network, alternate Saturday mornings from 12:30 to one.
However I am skipping the 2 Sept. Shows and won't return to it (It goes on
without me) till Oct 6th. It's a chore. No Hollywood at all alas except a short
story which was bought, one of 3 by different writers and incorporated into a
movie called Queen for a Day which I haven't seen. Yes I spent 9 weeks in
Arizona in 44, near Phoenix and loved it. I love the desert anyway. They say
Tucson is even better. Either would by very very hot in summer. Folks
that can go to the mountains in summer, the business men weekends, anyway, air
conditioned houses otherwise. There are mountains about 100 or so miles from
Phoenix. No I haven't been to St Louis since I was a wee little child, during
the World's Fair. The east is cold, of course, New England very cold. Even in
southern Conn. we have zero and sub zero weather and lots of snow as a rule tho
we have had some mild winters, milder I mean. We had 36 inches of snow in our
back yard one Dec 26th; lots of ice always but last year was fairly mild, I
managed to get to the city for my show but temps below freezing obtain much of
th time to I recall one Xmas when it was 50! It is also damp, but not as damp as
in New York City. We are north and east of New York. I haven't written much had
a story in August Good Housekeeping; have a one shot coming in Oct.
American and a story or two, later in Woman's Home Comp but much
of what I did write didn't sell. So back I go to it after year's end; now I am
writing my hard book after 5 years thought, as a gift, to me from myself. This
is a sweet old house about 1800 and if we ever get settled we will love it.
Sincerely yours". Faith Baldwin (1893-1978) wrote more than 85
books, including over 60 novels, mostly light fiction for female audiences.
Her popularity peaked during the Depression, when many of her works appeared in
serial and movie form. She wrote a column for Woman's Day magazine, and hosted a
radio and later TV program, Faith Baldwin Romance Theatre. Multiple
mailing folds. Top edge frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
