Typed letter signed "Fannie Hurst". 1 page, 8½x11. March
30, 1939. Addressed to Miss Willa Gray Martin, New York City. In
full: "My dear Miss Martin: Thank you for your letter of March 27th with
enclosures. I think it is an intelligent thing to do because even while the
person interviewed may forget it, the ultimate printed story coming along
revives interest. I hope you are moving along toward fulfillment of your
ideas and ideals. I think you did a good job on your interview with me.
Sincerely yours, Fannie Hurst". WILLA GRAY MARTIN (1911-2006) was a
reporter for Associated Press. She was the second wife of Marvin Pierce,
president of Redbook and McCall's publisher McCall Corporation.
FANNIE HURST (1885-1968), one of the most popular novelists in
America from the 1910s through the 1940s, wrote 17 novels, nine volumes of
short stories, three plays and numerous articles. Between 1918 and 1971, over
30 movies and TV shows were adapted from her works, including Back
Street (1932, 1941, and 1961) and Imitation of Life (1934, 1948, 1959
and 1960). Her autobiography Anatomy of Me was first published in 1958.
Lightly toned soiled and creased. Random ink stains. Tack hole near top edge.
Folded in half horizontally and twice vertically. Otherwise in fine
condition.
