Author Fannie Hurst signed this typed letter in 1941 to turn down an invitation, as she would be doing a USO tour of inspection at Camp Dix.
Typed letter signed "Fannie Hurst" in red ink. Pencil notations in top right corner in unknown hand. 1 page, 5½x7. June 20th, 1941. Addressed to Dr. Frank Kingdon of the Committee to Defend America, New York City. In full: "Dear Frank Kingdon: Unfortunately I will be on a United Service Organization tour of inspection of Camp Dix on Monday, and will therefore be unable to at-tend the meeting at the Hotel Astor. If anything transpires that makes my cooperation of any value, command me. Fanny Hearst/IVC". Hurst (1885-1968), one of the most popular novelists in America from the 1910s through the 1940s, wrote 17 novels, nine volumes of short stories, three plays and numerous articles. Between 1918 and 1971, over 30 movies and TV shows were adapted from her works, including Back Street (1932, 1941, and 1961) and Imitation of Life (1934, 1948, 1959 and 1960). Her autobiography Anatomy of Me was first published in 1958. Lightly soiled. Paper clip in top left corner. Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
