Davenport handwrote, dated and signed this letter to an admirer on her monogrammed stationery in 1888. It comes matted to 14x10 with a b/w sepia-toned full-length photo of Davenport in a long white dress and leaning on a short pillar.
Autograph letter signed "Fanny Davenport". 1 page, 4¼x7¼ visible, on fabric-textured stationery with raised copper-colored monogram. Mattedto 13¾x10¾ with 3½x6½ b/w sepia-toned full-length photo of Davenport. Jan. 12, 1888. In full: "My dear Sir I play 'Fidora' at Grand Opera House in a couple of weeks Yours very truly". American stage actress Davenport (1850-1898, born in London, England) made her debut at the age of 12 as the King of Spain in Faint Heart Never Won Fair Lady. In 1869, she joined the famed company of Augustin Daly, which traveled across the U.S. and toured England, Germany and France, presenting adaptations of foreign works and revivals of Shakespearean comedies. Leaving to form her own company, Davenport appeared in such plays as Sardous Fedora (1883) and Cleopatra (1890), making her final appearance on March 25, 1898, shortly before her death. Fanny was the daughter of American stage actor Edward Loomis Davenport (1816-1877) and English stage actress Fanny Vining. Not matted in Gallery of History style. Letter is lightly toned and creased. Monogram has rubbed off in several places. Folded in quarters and unfolded. Photo is lightly toned, creased and rippled. Light tear on right edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
