English-born American stage actress FANNY DAVENPORT(1850-1898) made her debut at the age of 12 as the King of Spain in Faint Heart Never Won Fair Lady. In 1869, she joined the famed company of Augustin Daly, which traveled across the U.S. and toured England, Germany and France, presenting adaptations of foreign works and revivals of Shakespearean comedies. Leaving to form her own company, Davenport appeared in such plays as Sardous Fedora (1883) and Cleopatra (1890), making her final appearance on March 25, 1898, shortly before her death. Fanny was the daughter of American stage actor Edward Loomis Davenport (1816-1877) and English stage actress Fanny Vining. MARCUS MAYER (1841-1918) was a talent manager in the late 1800's, managing several popular actors and actresses during the era, including Sarah Bernhardt, Adelina Patti, Edwin Booth, Lady Hugo de Bathe, and Fanny Davenport. He also helped manage larger clients, most notably the Italian Opera Company. His last managing contract was with actress Emma Calvé in 1904, mostly retiring thereafter and passing away several years later after falling ill. Lightly creased with folds, light vertical folds at the "F" of Franny and the "D" in Davenport. "X" cut cancellation nicks one word of writing and the "r" and "s" of Marcus. Bank stamps on verso lightly show through. Stray ink marks. Otherwise, fine condition.
