THEODORE HESBURGH
As President of Notre Dame, he signs a program from a Chicago luncheon where he was the featured speaker.
Program signed: "Father T. Hesburgh", 5x7 affixed to a 7¼x9¾ white piece of paper (two surfaces). Program for a Management Luncheon in the International Ballroom of the Conrad Hilton. Hesburgh is pictured with a brief printed bio, above introductions for two other guests. Dated (unknown hand): March 29th 1971, Chicago, Illinois. Father Theodore Hesburgh (1917-2015) was President of Notre Dame for 35 years (1952-1987), overseeing a doubling of enrollment and faculty and the admission of female students. Appointed to the US Civil Rights Commission in 1957 and becoming its Chairman in 1969, he was removed from the post by President Nixon. Democratic Presidential candidate George McGovern considered him as a running mate in 1972. He was appointed by President Carter to head a commission on immigration reform, and was a co-founder of the free speech advocacy group, People for the American Way. More outspoken on social issues than theological ones, Hesburgh has been a strong advocate of interfaith dialogue. He is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the holder of the most honorary degrees (150). White page frayed at left edge. Ink note (unknown hand) at bottom right. Otherwise, fine condition.
