FEODOR CHALIAPIN
Feodor Chaliapin signs a program in black ink.
Program signed: "F. Chaliapin," 24 pages, 6½x8. "Chaliapine (sic)Concert Tour/In aid of the National Council of Social Services in the Distressed Areas". Signed on the cover, partially on 3¾x4¼ b/w image. Feodor Chaliapin (1873-1938) was an acclaimed Russian operatic bass singer who lived as an émigré from 1921 (while insisting that he was not anti-Soviet). His signature character was Boris Gudunov. First heard on stage in Russia in 1894, he made a spectacular European debut at La Scala in 1901. While making Paris his home, he was a regular at New York's Metropolitan Opera for 8 years (1921-1929). Known for his naturalistic acting, Chaliapin starred in English, French and German versions of The Adventures of Don Quixote, filmed separately for each language rather than subtitled (1933). He published a memoir in 1932. One of his sons, Fyodor Chaliapin, Jr., became a successful Western character actor, while another, Boris, was an artist whose work appeared on the cover of Time magazine 414 times. Fine condition.
