FERRUCCIO BUSONI
With their homelands at war, Busoni inscribed and signed this greeting to
Hungarian pianist Alexander Raab in New York in 1915.
Inscribed Signature in German, fully translated: "For the young
friend/Alexander Raab/With lovely sympathy/And heartfelt wishes/August 1915 N.
York", 8x1¾ piece of paper. FERRUCCIO BUSONI(1866-1924) was an
Italian pianist, composer, writer and teacher. A child prodigy performing
in public by age 7, Busoni composed melodically complex works, mostly for
piano, which require great skill and stamina to perform. His musical
influences were from many sources: he adapted works of Bach but also showed
great interest in Indian and Native American music. His maxim was: "Music was
born free; and to win freedom is its destiny." Alexander Raab (1882-1940) was
a Hungarian pianist. On May 23, 1915, Italy joined World War I, declaring war on
the Austro-Hungarian Empire. That same year, Raab emigrated to the United
States, where he taught and performed for the rest of his life. This
signature must have been inscribed shortly after his arrival. Busoni, who had
lived in Germany for many years before World War I, refused to perform in any
country involved in the war. (The U.S. was still neutral in 1915.) Mounting
remnants on verso (no show-through). Fine condition.
