Zero Mostel, Maria Karnilova, Jerome Robbins, and three others sign on a program for the original production of Fiddler on the Roof
Program signed: "Zero Mostel" (signed twice), "Maria Karnilova", "Joe Ponazecki", "Jerome Robbins", "Joseph Stein", "Richard Altman", 16 pages, 9x12. Showbill for the original production of Fiddler on the Roof. ZERO MOSTEL (1915-1977) won three Tony Awards for his Broadway appearances in Rhinoceros, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Fiddler on the Roof. He followed Forum with one of the classic comedy performances of all time, producer Max Bialystock in Mel Brooks' The Producers. Mostel's final appearance was in the Academy Award-winning documentary Best Boy (1979). JEROME ROBBINS (1918-1998) was one of the first great American-born ballet masters and also a major Broadway and film choreographer. He won Tony Awards for Best Choreography in 1948 (High Button Shoes), 1958 (West Side Story) and 1965 (Fiddler on the Roof) and in 1989 for directing Jerome Robbins' Broadway. He won the 1961 Academy Award for Best Director for West Side Story and an Honorary 1961 Academy Award for his choreography of the film. MARIA KARNILOVA (1920-2001) was an American stage actress of Russian descent, appearing in several Broadway plays and ballets. Her Broadway debut was in the play Call Me Mister (1946) as a ballerina, dancing for several more plays and recitals before originating the role of Golde in Fiddler on the Roof (1964). The role would win her a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and she would be nominated for a Tony again for her performance in Zorba (1969). She retired from the stage in 1981, appearing in a few films afterwards, but ultimately retiring completely from acting shortly after. She was married to fellow stage performer George S. Irving. JOSEPH STEIN (1912-2010) wrote the books for such hit musicals as Fiddler on the Roof, Zorba, Rags, Take Me Along and The Baker's Wife. The winner of two 1965 Tony Awards (Best Author - Musical and Best Musical) for Fiddler of the Roof, Stein has also been nominated for Tony Awards for Take Me Along (1960, Best Musical), Zorba (1969, Best Musical) and Rags (1987, Best Book of a Musical). A social worker who wrote comedy on the side, Stein joined the writing team for the Sid Caesar Show, joining the ranks of such comedy legends as Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart, Mel Tolkin and Aaron Ruben. In 1955, he and his writing partner, Will Glickman, collaborated on Plain and Fancy, the musical that provided the inspiration for Fiddler on the Roof. Stein has also been the librettist for a number of musicals, including Mr. Wonderful (1956), Take Me Along (1959), Juno (1959), Fiddler on the Roof (1964), Zorba (1968, 1983), The Baker's Wife (1976), Rags (1986), Miracles (1999-2000) and Over and Over (1999).
