FREDERICK S. ROBERTS
He pens a letter of thanks for a Christmas present received, dated 1910!
Autograph Letter Signed: "Roberts" , 2 p, 4¾x6¾. On personal letterhead with embossed seal. Englemere, (England), 1910 December 22. Signed on 2nd page. To "My Dear Mrs. Graham." In full: "How kind of you to send me such a nice Xmas present. I was contemplating having to add to my wardrobe when your very useful gift arrived! I hope you and your husband are keeping well. With my kindest regards and best wishes. Believe me Yours sincerely." Field Marshal Lord Roberts' most noteworthy achievement was the march on Kandahar. It took Roberts 22 days to move his army from Kabul to Kandahar, 313 miles across Afghanistan's hostile terrain. On September 1, 1880, he obliterated Ayub Khan's Afghan Army in the decisive victory of the Afghan War. Until the U.S. intervention in 2002, Roberts was the only General to have emerged with flying colors from an expedition into Afghanistan in the last 200 years. From 1892, he was known as Baron Roberts of Kandahar. Roberts (1832-1914) later served as Commander in Chief in India (1885-1893), Commander in Chief in Ireland (1895-1899) and he held the supreme command in South Africa (1899-1900). During the Boer War, he annexed the Orange Free State and Transvaal and captured Johannesburg and Pretoria. Lightly soiled at edges. Nail head sized stain in blank upper right. Otherwise, fine condition.
