His signature as a Field Marshal, on a white card
Signature: "J. S. Cassels/Field Marshal", 5½ x 3½. Sir Charles Archibald James Halkett Cassels (1907-1996), a Sandhurst graduate, commanded a brigade in France in 1940, and later a battalion of the Scottish Highland Regiment (the Black Watch). He helped plan the Normandy invasion of 1944, and commanded a brigade in the field there. He led the 1st Commonwealth Division during the Korean War and was Director of Operations for the successful counter-insurgency effort in Malaya. In 1960, he became Commander of the British Army of the Rhine. He was Chief of the General Staff from 1965 until his retirement in 1968, when he received the rank of Field Marshal. Cassels was also a talented cricket player. Lightly soiled on upper edge. Otherwise fine condition.
