MONTGOMERY OF ALAMEIN
He signs a typescript with portions of the speech he made at Mansion House in London, England on March 24, 1944.
Typescript Signed: "Montgomery of Alamein/F.M.," 3 page, 8½x11, separate sheets, on parchment-like paper. Titled: "'Salute the Soldier'/from a speech by/Field-Marshall (sic) Montgomery." Portions of his speech atMansion House, London, England, March 24, 1944. In part: "I would like to speak to you today about the soldier-about the fighting men who came from all parts of the Empire to answer the call of duty. It has been my great honour and privilege to command a large Imperial Army overseas in Africa, and in the Italian campaign. The men of the British Empire make magnificent soldiers. In the business of war, it is 'the man' that counts; and it seems to me it must be the same in civil life...I would like to plead for the help of the whole nation in the task of inspiring the soldiers of our land at this momentous time...When overseas I called on my chaplains to help me in my task; and right well did they answer the call. In the Eighth Army the inspiration had its roots in my call to the soldiers before Alamein: 'The Lord mighty in battle' will give us the victory...." In November, 1942, Montgomery of Alamein began the offensive at el-Alamein driving Rommel's forces from Egypt, Libya, and Tripolitania and forcing "The Desert Fox" to abandon the Mareth Line in southern Tunisia in March, 1943. Ten weeks after this speech, Montgomery commanded the ground forces under Eisenhower's direction in the D-Day invasion of Europe, which he had planned with the American General. General Bernard Law Montgomery (1887-1976) had returned to Britain in January 1944 to lead the land forces under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower in Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of the beaches of Normandy. Earlier in WWII, Montgomery had launched an attack on Rommel's forces at El Alamein in northern Egypt (October 23, 1942). When their lines broke, he pursued the German troops into Libya and beyond, becoming the first Allied general to inflict a decisive defeat on a German army. On November 10, 1942, Montgomery was knighted and promoted to full General. Shortly before the Normandy landings, Montgomery was given command of the 21st Army Group, which he would head through the rest of the war in Europe. On D-Day and for several months afterward, Montgomery was in charge of all allied ground forces, including British, Canadian and American troops. When U.S. forces became predominant in the war, Eisenhower took over control of American troops in addition to serving as Supreme Commander. Montgomery, who was bitter over the action, was then named Field Marshal by Churchill. In 1946, Montgomery became 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein. Fine condition.
