MONTGOMERY OF ALAMEIN
He writes about his friend Ike.
Typescript signed: "Montgomery of Alamein/F.M.", 2p, 8½x11. Titled: "Eisenhower, a remarkable and most lovable man." In part: "I first met Ike in the spring of 1942, in England, but only for a few minutes and he made no great impression on me at that time. The next occasion was in Tunisia in April 1943. The Eighth Army, having fought its way from Alamein, was about to join hands with his forces which had landed in North Africa in November 1942. I was now under his command. This time he stayed a night with me and made a very definite impression. He had never seen a shot fired in war till the landings in North Africa on the 8th November 1942, and he had never before commanded troops in battle. We talked much and I was greatly impressed by his quick grasp of a problem and by the way he radiated confidence and kindness...." General Bernard Law Montgomery (1887-1976) launched an attack on Rommel's forces at El Alamein in northern Egypt on October 23, 1942. When their lines broke, he pursued the German troops into Libya and beyond. Montgomery was the first Allied general to inflict a decisive defeat on a German army. On November 10, 1942, Montgomery was knighted and promoted to full General. In January 1944, he returned to Britain to lead the land forces under the command of General Eisenhower in the Normandy landing. In 1946, Montgomery became 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein.
