thanks for your copy of verses which I like very well as they are, and beg they
may not be altered. I shall be much obliged for a dozen copies if so many are to
spare." Robert Cornelis Napier (1810-1890), noted for his exploits in India,
commanded the 2nd Division in the British expedition in China (1860) and served
as acting Viceroy and Governor General of India (1863). From 1865-1870, he
commanded the Bombay Army and commanded the punitive expedition against Ethiopia
in 1868, taking the stronghold of Magdala. He was created 1st Baron Napier of
Magdala in 1868 and Field Marshal in 1883. Folds touch signature. Creased.
