FILLMORE EAST: PETE TOWNSHEND, JOHN KAY, GENE CORNISH, "SCREAMIN'" SCOTT SIMON, DAVID LaFLAMME, JOHN SEBASTIAN, DINO DANELLI, DICKIE PETERSON, STEVE KNIGHT, JERRY VELEZ, CYNTHIA ROBINSON, JERRY MARTINI and JOHN DAWSON
B/w 11x14 photo of the famous New York City music venue signed by a Who's Who of 1960s and 1970s rock, including Pete Townshend and founding members of Sha Na Na and New Riders of the Purple Sage
Photograph signed "Gene Cornish", "Cynthia/Robinson", "Pete/Townshend", "Jerry Velez", "Jerry Martini", "Steve Knight", "Dickie Peterson", "Screamin' Scott", "David LaFlamme", "John/Sebastian", "John/Kay", "Dino Danelli" and, on verso, "John Dawson", all in blue ink. B/w, 10x7¾ overall, 9½x6¼ image, one surface. This photo of New York City's Fillmore East, dated nine days before the music venue closed, is signed by a Who's Who of late 1960's and early 1970's rock. PETE TOWNSHEND is of course best known for his guitar smashing antics (and, incidentally, his song writing) with the Who. "SCREAMIN'" SCOTT SIMON was a founding member of 1950s nostalgia band Sha Na Na. JOHN DAWSON was a founding member of New Riders of the Purple Sage and appeared on three Grateful Dead albums: Aoxomoaoa (1969), American Beauty (1970) and Workingman's Dead (1970). This photo CYNTHIA ROBINSON and JERRY MARTINI of Sly and the Family Stone; JOHN KAY of Steppenwolf; JOHN SEBASTIAN of The Lovin' Spoonful; JERRY VELEZ, drummer with Jimi Hendrix's Gypsy Sun and the Rainbows; GENE CORNISH and DINO DANELLI of the Young Rascals; singer/songwriter DAVID LAFLAMME, founder of It's a Beautiful Day and the first incarnation of Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks; STEVE KNIGHT of blues rock outfit Mountain and acid-folksy The Devil's Anvil; and DICKIE ANDERSON of Blue Cheer. Rock promoter Bill Graham opened the Fillmore East in New York City on March 8, 1968, at a site formerly occupied by a Yiddish theater and then a run-down movie house, in order to have an East Coast complement to his Fillmore West in San Francisco. The Fillmore East held its last concert on June 27, 1971, but in its slightly over three years it featured performances by many of rock's established and emerging stars, as well as jazz and folk performances. Several live performances at the Fillmore East were turned into record albums. Although the site of the 3,664-seat auditorium is now occupied by an apartment house, a Fillmore East Preservation Society helps keep its legend alive. Lightly bowed and soiled. Lightly creased corners. Random ink stains on verso. Otherwise in fine condition.
