BARBARA BUSH
Barbara Bush sends a typed letter of thanks for the Easter prayer.
Typed Letter Signed: "Barbara (Bush)", 1p, 6¼x8½. The Vice President's House/Washington, D.C., 1983 April 1. To Mrs. Eagle, which Mrs. Bush has crossed out and handwritten: "Lou". In full: "George and I wanted to thank you for your lovely Easter prayer. It was very thoughtful of you to think of us at this special time. Thank you again." Mrs. Bush has added in holograph: "Thank you, dear friend. You are such a light to all your friends. Happy everything!" George and Barbara Bush passed the record as the longest married presidential couple, held by John and Abigail Adams (54 years and three days) on January 10, 1999. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on January 6, 2003. Coincidences in U.S. history also concern John Adams and George Herbert Walker Bush. Both were born in Massachusetts and served as Vice President for eight years. Each was the incumbent Vice President when elected President. Both sought reelection and were defeated by a candidate named Jefferson, who was then reelected (Thomas Jefferson, William Jefferson Clinton). Adams' eldest son, John Quincy Adams, same first and last name but different middle name, later ran for President and was elected. Bush's eldest son, George Walker Bush, same first and last name but different middle name, was elected President in 2000. Both sons became President following controversial elections. John Q. Adams served only one term (whether George W. Bush will add another coincidence or serve an additional term remains to be seen). Barbara Bush (1925-2018), with her sensible, down-to earth manner was an enormously popular First Lady. In addition to her many duties, she crusaded against illiteracy and supported programs to help the homeless and fight drug abuse. The first woman since Abigail Adams to be wife of one President and mother of another, she is the only First Lady to witness her son's presidential inauguration. Fine condition.
