Typed Letter Signed: "Barbara Bush", 1p, 6¼x8½. The Vice President's House,
Washington, D.C., 1983 June 20. To Reverend and Mrs. Britton. In full: "George and I
were so pleased to learn that you are celebrating your Golden Anniversary. We join with your
family [and] many friends in wishing you the very best on this happy occasion." In a handwritten
postscript, Mrs. Bush pens: "Have a wonderful day!" At the time of this letter, the Bushes
had been married for more than 38 years. Nine presidential couples have celebrated their
Golden Wedding anniversaries. Since 1974, the Vice President has lived in a large,
white-painted, Victorian house on the southeast corner of 34th Street and Massachusetts
Avenue in Washington, D.C. Located on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory, the
official title of the home is "The Admiral's House". It is pictured on Mrs. Bush's stationery.
Barbara and George Bush, who were married on January 6, 1945, in the First Presbyterian
Church in Rye, New York, Barbara Pierce married "the first man I ever kissed" have been
together for over 60 years, a record for a U.S. presidential couple. Bush was Reagan's Vice
President from 1981-1989 before serving as 41st U.S. President (1989-1993). Barbara
Bush (1925-2018), with her sensible, down-to earth manner was an enormously popular
First Lady. In addition to her many duties, she crusaded against illiteracy and supported
programs to help the homeless and fight drug abuse. The first woman since Abigail Adams
to be wife of one President and mother of another, she is the only First Lady to witness her
