ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
Rare franking signature.
Envelope free franked at upper right: "Free/Anna Eleanor Roosevelt", 6½x3½. Blue cachet depicting the United States Navy at lower left. Postmarked aboard the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt on November 13, 1951. The USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, a 45,000-ton "Midway" class large aircraft carrier, was built at the New York Navy Yard and was commissioned on Navy Day, October 27, 1945, the 87th birthday of Theodore Roosevelt. Born in 1884, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was named after her mother, Anna Livingston Hall Roosevelt. She married distant cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1905. As her mother had died of diphtheria in 1892 and her father died after falling from a horse in 1894, her father's brother, President Theodore Roosevelt, gave her away. President Franklin D. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945. On May 7, 1945, a special act of Congress granted the franking privilege to Mrs. Roosevelt. Eleanor Roosevelt usually used a rubber stamped frank. Her ink franks are scarce. Rectangular tan stain at lower right, else in fine condition.
