ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
Eleanor Roosevelt sends a typed letter of regret that there are no funds available.
Typed Letter Signed: "Eleanor Roosevelt", 1p, 6x7. New York, 1961 January 25. To Mr. Phillips. In full: "I was interested to get your letter and I wish I could tell you that there are funds for the purpose you mention. However, I am sorry to say that no such funds exist. With many regards, Very sincerely yours," Written on her "Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt/55 East 74th Street/New York City 21, N.Y." stationery. In 1960, it was discovered that Mrs. Roosevelt had a plastic anemia, tuberculosis of the bone marrow. She also developed phlebitis and could not walk for several weeks until the swelling receded. Many did not expect her to attend President Kennedy's inauguration on January 20, 1961, just five days before she wrote this letter, but unannounced, she arrived in Washington on a train from New York, carrying her own bag. Mrs. Roosevelt refused JFK's invitation to sit on the platform with him because she could not stand his father, Joseph Kennedy, who had said in an interview 20 years earlier after FDR had been elected to a third term, "Democracy is all finished in England" and "it may be here". Stain in upper left blank area, else in fine condition.
