Eleanor Roosevelt sends a typed letter trying to arrange a time to
meet.
Typed Letter signed: "Eleanor Roosevelt", 1 p, 6x7. On
personal letterhead. New York, New York, 1960 March 11. To "Dear Miss
Hershan". In full: "I would love to meet you but I'm
sorry to say I cannot manage an appointment until April 8th. Would it be
possible for you to come here on April 8th ay 4:30 p.m? With my good wishes,
Very sincerely yours." When Anna Eleanor Roosevelt married her distant
cousin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1905, her uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt,
gave her away. Eleanor (1884-1962) served as First Lady for 12 years and 39
days (March 4, 1933 until her husband's death of a cerebral hemorrhage on
April 12, 1945), longer than any other woman.She had previously been
First Lady of New York when FDR was Governor of the state (1929-1933).
Eleanor later became known as "First Lady of the World" for her humanitarian
efforts, including getting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted
by the United Nations. Stained at right edge touching "elt" of Roosevelt and
jagged. Fold crease not near signature. Otherwise, fine
condition.
