ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
Eleanor Roosevelt sends a typed letter of recommendation for a man trying to get on with the phone company.
Typed Letter Signed: "Eleanor Roosevelt" as First Lady, 1p, 6x9¼. The White House, Washington, 1940 April 8. To Mr. Kilpatrick. In full: "I have been asked to write you a note in behalf of Mr. Joseph Piazza, 160 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, New York, who is desirous of getting into the Poughkeepsie Branch of the New York Telephone Company. I would appreciate whatever consideration you may be able to give his application. Very sincerely yours". When Anna Eleanor Roosevelt married her distant cousin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1905, her uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt, gave her away. Eleanor (1884-1962) served as First Lady for 12 years and 39 days (March 4, 1933 until her husband's death of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945), longer than any other woman. She had previously been First Lady of New York when FDR was Governor of the state (1929-1933). Eleanor later became known as "First Lady of the World" for her humanitarian efforts, including getting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations. Fold creases not near signature. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at bottom margin. Lightly soiled, else fine condition.
