Eleanor Roosevelt sends a typed letter of thanks for dining with the president and her.
Typed Letter signed: "Eleanor Roosevelt", 1 p, 6x9¼. On White House stationery. Washington, D.C., 1940 June 15. To "My dear Judge Dowd". In full: "It was such a pleasure to the President and me to have you dine with us. We both enjoyed seeing you. I so much appreciated all you did in Olean and I was so happy to have a chance to have supper with you and your daughters. Sincerely yours." Unevenly tanned. Otherwise, fine condition. Accompanied by unsigned envelope with typed address to Judge Thomas H. Dowd, Dowd Building, Salamanca, New York, postmarked Washington, D.C., June 17, 1940. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition. When Anna Eleanor Roosevelt married her distant cousin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1905, her uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt, gave her away. Eleanor (1884-1962) served as First Lady for 12 years and 39 days (March 4, 1933 until her husband's death of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945), longer than any other woman. She had previously been First Lady of New York when FDR was Governor of the state (1929-1933). Eleanor later became known as "First Lady of the World" for her humanitarian efforts, including getting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations. Judge Dowd had been a delegate from New York state to the Democratic National Convention of 1932 which nominated FDR for his first run for President. Two items.
