Eleanor Roosevelt sends a typed letter of thanks for the letter.
Typed Letter signed: "Eleanor Roosevelt", 1 p, 6x7. On personal letterhead. Hyde Park, N.Y., 1960 August 19. To "Dear Mrs. Cohen". In full: "Thank you for your letter which interested me. If you will read my column in the NY Post for August 23rd, I think you will find I have answered your question. With my good wishes, Very sincerely yours." Lightly creased. Clear mounting tape remnants in upper corners. ¼-inch horizontal tear in lower left corner. Otherwise, fine condition. Accompanied by original envelope, 6x3¾, with typed address of Mrs. Harriett Cohen, North Miami, Florida, with stamped frank of Mrs. Roosevelt. Lightly soiled. Opened at left edge, with 1x¼-inch paper loss at left of upper edge. When Anna Eleanor Roosevelt married her distant cousin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1905, her uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt, gave her away. Eleanor (1884-1962) served as First Lady for 12 years and 39 days (March 4, 1933 until her husband's death of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945), longer than any other woman. She had previously been First Lady of New York when FDR was Governor of the state (1929-1933). Eleanor later became known as "First Lady of the World" for her humanitarian efforts, including getting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations. Two items.
