Eleanor Roosevelt sends a typed letter of thanks for the kind
thoughts about her husband.
Typed Letter Signed: "Eleanor Roosevelt", 1p, 6x7. New
York, New York, 1945 October 31. On her personal stationery to Mr. Norwell.
In full: "Thank you very much for your letter. I am glad to know that
you held my husband in such respect and esteem and I am deeply grateful for the
kind things you say about him. I am sorry that I do not have a photograph which
I could send you. I only had a few pictures at the time of my husband's death
and these were given away months ago. All I have left are those which belong to
the family." Eleanor Roosevelt's husband, President Franklin D.
Roosevelt, had died on April 12, 1945 of a cerebral hemorrhage. When Anna
Eleanor Roosevelt married her distant cousin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1905,
her uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt, gave her away. Eleanor served as
First Lady for 12 years and 39 days (March 4, 1933-April 12, 1945), longer
than any other woman.She had previously been First Lady of New
York when FDR was Governor of the state (1929-1933). Eleanor later became
known as "First Lady of the World" for her humanitarian efforts, including
getting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations.
