Anna ELEANOR ROOSEVELT (1884-1962) was America's First Lady 1933-1945.
Despite strains in her marriage to Franklin, she was an active and eloquent
supporter of his New Deal program. After his death, Mrs. Roosevelt continued to
voice strong support for liberal causes, including Civil Rights and the United
Nations. She had a syndicated newspaper column, "My Day." The reference to
hockey in her column of November 7, 1947 concerns a visiting women's field
hockey team from Britain, undefeated in its American tour. She mentions
coincidentally that she learned to play field hockey while a student in London.
