Eleanor Roosevelt sends a typed letter of congratulations for the
election to the Cosmopolitan Club.
Typed Letter signed: "Eleanor", 1 p, 6x9¼. On White House
stationery. Washington, D.C., 1940 November 29. To "Dear Agnes".
In full: "I am simply delighted that Elinor Morgenthau has been
elected to the Cosmopolitan Club. I think it is grand and I am so glad
everything went through so smoothly. Affectionately." When Anna Eleanor
Roosevelt married her distant cousin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1905, her uncle,
President Theodore Roosevelt, gave her away. Eleanor (1884-1962) served as
First Lady for 12 years and 39 days (March 4, 1933 until her husband's death
of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945), longer than any other woman.She had previously been First Lady of New York when FDR was Governor
of the state (1929-1933). Eleanor later became known as "First Lady of the
World" for her humanitarian efforts, including getting the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations. Elinor MORGENTHAU
was the wife of Henry Morgenthau, Jr., FDR's Secretary of the Treasury
(1934-1945). When Elinor Morgenthau was not allowed to join New York's Colony
Club in 1937, Eleanor Roosevelt quit in protest. Slightly soiled. Fine
condition.
