FRANCES F. CLEVELAND
The mother of four does not need a cook as she has one for the winter. Perhaps President McKinley needs one.
ALS: "Frances F. Cleveland", 3½p, 4x5½, front and verso. Westland, Princeton, New Jersey, 1897 December 3. In full: "I want to thank you for your very kind note - both for its pleasant personal side - & for the matter of Lucy - I am really sorry that I am not free to take Lucy now - if she would care to come for our 'country wages' - but I have now an excellent cook. She cannot stay with me however, as Mrs. Jefferson has merely loaned her to me for the winter. So that if toward spring Lucy is still without a good place I should be very glad to know it - if she would come to us for $25 - - I don't suppose President McKinley would want her?- Possibly they are satisfied - our old Steward Sinclair is still there. With very many thanks - and all good wishes." Fine condition. With original postmarked stamped envelope addressed by the former First Lady to Mrs. Arthur E. Bateman, Washington, D.C. Torn back flap, else fine. Written nine months after leaving the White House. Mrs. Frances Folsom Cleveland married bachelor President Grover Cleveland there during his first term in 1886. She was now the mother of four children under the age of seven: six-year-old Ruth, four-year-old Esther, two-year-old Marion and the newest addition to the Cleveland family, their first son, five-week-old Richard. Two items.
