FRANCES CLEVELAND
Envelope hand addressed and franked by her (as "Frances F. Cleveland Preston") in 1926
Free Frank signed: "Frances F. Cleveland Preston", 6x3½. Addressed in her hand to Mrs. Neal Cleveland, in Columbus, Ohio. Postmarked, Princeton, New Jersey, November 15, 1926. Printed return address on reverse flap. On June 2, 1886, 21-year-old Frances Folsom married 49-year-old bachelor President Grover Cleveland in the White House, the only Presidential spouse to be wed there (widower Woodrow Wilson remarried while in office, to Edith Galt Wilson, but they wed in a private ceremony at her home). The daughter of Cleveland's late law partner, Frances was 11-years-old when her father died and she became Cleveland's ward. The Clevelands had five children. Grover Cleveland died in 1908, and on February 10, 1913, his 48-year-old widow married 32-year-old Thomas J. Preston, Jr., Professor of Archaeology at Princeton University. Mrs. Preston died in 1947. Soiled, top edge ragged from opening. Cancellation grooves, not touching signature.
