FRANCES F. CLEVELAND
The first First Lady married in the White House was also the first President's widow to remarry.
Envelope franked: "Frances F. Cleveland Preston", 5½x3½. Addressed by her to: "Mr. Thos P. Stulls/Princeton Bank & Trust Co./Princeton,/N.J." Postmarked Princeton, N.J., 7PM, February 18, 1934. When Frances Folsom's father died, she was 11. His law partner, Grover Cleveland, became her guardian. "Uncle Cleve" took care of Frances and her mother as if they were his own. Ten years later, on June 2, 1886, the 49-year-old bachelor President married his 21-year-old ward in the White House. They had two sons and three daughters. Grover Cleveland died in 1908 at the age of 71. On February 10, 1913, his 48-year-old widow married 32-year-old Princeton archeology professor Thomas Jex Preston, Jr. First Lady Helen Taft threw them a pre-wedding reception at the White House. Frances Folsom Cleveland Preston was 83 when she died in 1947. Shaded at margins, touching signature. Nick at top left edge. Overall, fine condition.
