GRACE COOLIDGE
Grace Coolidge Franks an envelope.
Envelope franked: "Grace Coolidge", 6½x3½. Postmarked Columbus, North Carolina, March 12, 1935. Typed address to Mrs. Emile C. Andrews in Watertown, Massachusetts. Grace Coolidge, the widow of former President Calvin Coolidge, was granted the franking privilege, free use of the mails for life, by a special act of Congress on June 16, 1934. The Former Presidents Act of 1958 formalized the granting of the franking privilege to former Presidents and their widows. On October 4, 1905, 33-year-old Calvin Coolidge and 26-year-old Grace Anna Goodhue were married in Burlington, Vermont. They had two sons: John (1906-2000) and Calvin (1908-1924). Mrs. Coolidge was called her husband's greatest asset because of her warm, giving ways in contrast to her quiet husband. Forbidden by Coolidge to speak in public, she once answered reporters in sign language for the deaf. Coolidge set her schedule and would not let her fly in a plane, bob her hair, wear short skirts or ride a horse. The White House staff called her "Sunshine". After leaving the White House, the couple retired to Northampton, Massachusetts, but Mrs. Coolidge made frequent visits to North Carolina to visit friends after her husband's death. Circular postmark touches the "ace" of Grace and the "C" of Coolidge, postal markings at the lower loop of the "g" in Coolidge. Lightly creased. Slightly soiled at right margin, touching the "ge" of signature. Torn open at upper flap. Overall, fine condition.
