Mamie Doud Eisenhower sends an autograph letter of thanks for the card.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Mamie Doud Eisenhower", 1p, 5½x7½. The Eisenhower Farms, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 1977 February 7. To Patricia Burkett, Lakeland, Florida. In full: "Thank you for the lovely card you sent me 'He loves you' It is nice there are friendly folks like you and your friend-The pictures you saw in the papers were not given me and the enclosed (not present) are all I have." Slightly creased. Fine condition. With original envelope addressed by Eisenhower bearing her metered "five star" free frank and return address penned by her on verso: "Mrs Eisenhower/Gettysburg/Pa/17325". Mirror impression of postmark over return address. "Light the Candle/of Understanding/Epilepsy Foundation of America" sticker on verso of envelope. Fine condition. On July 1, 1916, 25-year-old Second Lieutenant Dwight D. Eisenhower and 19-year-old Mamie Geneva Doud (1896-1979) were married in Denver, Colorado. They had two sons: Dwight Doud Eisenhower (1917-1920) and John Sheldon Doud Eisenhower (born in 1923). As an Army wife for 37 years, Mamie grew accustomed to entertaining groups of influential people, a talent she drew upon during her eight years as the White House hostess (1953-1961). In their 53 years of married life, the Eisenhower's lived in 33 homes; their last in Gettysburg was the only home they owned together. During Ike's final illness, Mamie moved into Walter Reed Army Hospital to be with him during the final months of his life. Two items.
