Autograph Letter Signed: "Mamie Eisenhower", 1p, 7x8. No place but probably Gettysburg, 1973 November 13. On her monogrammed stationery to Alice and Lewis Strauss. In full: "What a wonderful surprise to receive the twelve splits Champagne yesterday from you two for my birthday. I deeply appreciate your thought for I know you have other things on your mind. Will take one box with me when I go West to-morrow and will celebrate Thanksgiving with Uncle Joel and lift our glasses to you two. Love always." LEWIS STRAUSS was appointed Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission by President Eisenhower in 1953 and Secretary of Commerce in 1958. MAMIE GENEVA DOUD was born in Boone, Iowa on November 14, 1896. She met then Second Lieutenant Dwight D. Eisenhower in October 1915 while visiting friends at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Mamie Doud were married at noon on July 1, 1916 in the Doud family home in Denver. Dwight Eisenhower died in 1969. Mamie Eisenhower died on November 1, 1979, two weeks before her 83rd birthday. Fine condition.
