MAMIE EISENHOWER
Black and white publicity photograph of Mamie Doud Eisenhower wearing a sparkly ball gown.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Mr. Harry Matchett with Sincere/Appreciation for his generous service-/my best wishes/Mamie Doud Eisenhower". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 6¼x7¾ (one surface). Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower lived in 33 homes during 53 years of married life. Their Gettysburg farm was the only home they ever owned together. It was not publicly known that Mrs. Eisenhower suffered from Mèniere's disease, an inner ear infection that affected her balance, causing rumors of alcoholism. After leaving the White House in 1961, she continued her custom of having a masseuse three times a week, going to Elizabeth Arden and having card parties. During her husband's final illness, Mamie moved into Walter Reed Army Hospital to be with him. Lightly worn and soiled at edges. Fine condition.
