MAMIE EISENHOWER
Mamie Eisenhower sends a typed letter of thanks for the anniversary wishes.
Typed Letter Signed: "Mamie Eisenhower", 1p, 6¼x9. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 1967 July 6. To Alice and Lewis L. Strauss, Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you for remembering us on our Fifty-First Wedding Anniversary. We always love hearing from our friends. John and Barbara and our three granddaughters spent the day with us and the many messages, flowers and calls made the occasion a lovely one. My Beau and I send our warm greetings to you and yours." Mrs. Eisenhower has handwritten a postscript: "Grateful we had another year to-gether. Love ME". Twenty-five-year-old Lieutenant Dwight D. Eisenhower had married 19-year-old Mamie Geneva Doud in Denver, Colorado on July 1, 1916. Their first child, Dwight (1917-1921), was three when he died of scarlet fever. Their other son, John, who was born in 1923, married Barbara Thompson in 1947. They had one son, David, and three daughters, Barbara, Susan and Mary. David married Julie Nixon in 1968. John and Barbara were divorced in 1986. Mamie and her beau had one more wedding anniversary. Dwight D. Eisenhower died on March 28, 1969 after 52 years and 270 days of marriage. Slightly creased. Ink "F" (unknown hand) at upper left corner. Fine condition.
