MAMIE EISENHOWER
"My best beau gave a surprise dinner party for me".
Typed Letter Signed: "Mamie Eisenhower", 1p, 6½x9. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 1964 November 20. The former First Lady writes to Alice Strauss, wife of her husband's Secretary of Commerce. In full: "How sweet of you and Lewis to send me the thoughtful birthday message. I do appreciate your kindness. The many remembrances - together with the lovely Georgia sunshine and the fact that my best beau gave a surprise dinner party for me - all made this a most wonderful anniversary." In a handwritten postscript signed: "M", Mrs. Eisenhower adds: "Been a couple of days in Walter Reed for 'checks'. Glad to say Ike's back is better - still a few sore spots". Mamie Eisenhower had celebrated her 68th birthday on November 14, 1964. LEWIS L. STRAUSS served as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (1953-1958) and Eisenhower's Secretary of Commerce (1958-1959, not confirmed by the Senate). Alice and Lewis Strauss were married from 1923 until his death in 1974. Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower lived in 33 homes during 53 years of married life. Their Gettysburg farm was the only home they ever owned together. It was not publicly known that Mrs. Eisenhower suffered from Mèniere's disease, an inner ear infection that affected her balance, causing rumors of alcoholism. After leaving the White House in 1961, she continued her custom of having a masseuse three times a week, going to Elizabeth Arden and having card parties. During her husband's final illness, Mamie moved into Walter Reed Army Hospital to be with him. Lightly creased at blank bottom margin. Fine condition.
