MARY LORD HARRISON
President Benjamin Harrison's second wife (the niece of his first wife) signs a free frank letter circa 1923
Envelope franked in upper right: "Mary Lord Harrison", 6x3½. Addressed by her to: "Mrs. Frank J [illegible] 241 west Euclid Ave". Postmarked New York, N.Y., October 20, 1923. In 1881, Elizabeth Scott Lord's daughter, Mary Scott Lord (1858-1948), married lawyer Walter E. Dimmick. He died three months later, and Mary moved back home with her mother. When her mother died, her Aunt Caroline, President Benjamin Harrison's first wife, invited her to live in the White House. Mary assisted her aunt in her social affairs and served as her secretary. In the summer of 1892, Caroline was taken ill. She died on October 25, 1892 at the age of 60. On April 6, 1896, in New York City, 37-year-old Mary Scott Lord Dimmick married her uncle, 62-year-old Benjamin Harrison. Conspicuously absent from the wedding were the groom's two children, who were older than the bride. Mary died in 1948 at the age of 89, surviving her husband by 46 years and both of her stepchildren. Toned. Torn from opening. Lightly soiled around edges.
