franked signature on this envelope.
Free Frank signed: "Mary Lord Harrison", 6x3½. Addressed in
her hand to "Mrs. Frank P. Wagner/40 West 55th Street/New York City".
Postmarked New York, N. Y., December 13, 1931. Elizabeth Scott had
married Russell Lord and her sister, Caroline Scott, had married Benjamin
Harrison. In 1881, Elizabeth Scott Lord's daughter, Mary Scott Lord, married
lawyer Walter E. Dimmick. He died three months later. Mary went to live with her
mother. When her mother died, her Aunt Caroline invited her to live in the White
House. Mary assisted her aunt in her social affairs and served as her
secretary. In the summer of 1892, Caroline was taken ill. She died on October
25, 1892 at the age of 60. On April 6, 1896, in New York City,
37-year-old Mary Scott Lord Dimmick married her uncle, 62-year-old Benjamin
Harrison. Conspicuously absent from the wedding were the groom's two
children, who were older than the bride. Mary died in 1948 at the age of 89,
surviving her husband by 46 years and both of her stepchildren. Former
Presidents and First Ladies continue to enjoy the franking privilege on
nonpolitical mail. Toned. Edges lightly worn. Pencil note in unknown hand on
