Partly Printed Check filled out and signed: "Carter's Warehouse/Rosalynn S. Carter", 8½x3. Plains, Gerogia, 1960 September 28. Goldenrod-colored check payable to Chester Nowell for $797.23. On the company account "To Plains Mercantile Co., Plains, Georgia, care Bank of Commerce, Americus, Georgia". Stamped twice on front at blank area at top: "This check is in payment of an/obligation to the United States/and must be paid at par. N.P. do not wire nonpayment. Farmers Home Administration". Stamped beneath Nowell's endorsement on verso: "Pay to the order of Bank of Terrell, Dawson, Georgia, in exchange for a draft drawn payable to The Treasurer of the United States", signed by an official of the Federal Home Administration. On July 7, 1946, 18-year-old Rosalynn Smith and 21-year-old Ensign Jimmy Carter were married in Plains, Georgia. After her father-in-law died in 1953, her husband Jimmy left the Navy to return home to run the family peanut business; Rosalynn kept the books. As First Lady, Mrs. Carter continued to support her main causes of mental health, the elderly and the Equal Rights Amendment. No cancellation holes. Rubber stamp lightly touches the "art" of Carter's. Fine condition.
