Autograph Note signed: "To Herbert/with best wishes/Florence
Bates", 5¾x4¼. Florence Bates (1888-1954) studied law after a
divorce, becoming the first female attorney in Texas. Later she hosted a
bilingual radio program there. In 1939, director Alfred Hitchcock cast her in
Rebecca, also defining her principal character role: that of a grand
dame. She appeared in 60 films over the next 15 years, including
The Moon in Sixpence, I Remember Mama and A Letter to Three
Wives. She appeared in many early TV series, mostly comedies, including
Burns & Allen, My Little Margie, Our Miss Brooks and I Love
Lucy. Toned and creased. Binding holes at left edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
