FLORENZ ZIEGFELD, JR. TLS: "Flo" in pencil, 1p, 8½x11. New York, 1916 May 25. To Charles B. Dillingham, Globe Theatre, New York. In part: "Will you kindly give Mr. Latham instructions, when he has any conversation with applicants for positions at the Century Theatre, that none are going to be decided upon until you and I decide upon them...There are three distinct parties to whom he said there are no vacancies, and they will all be selected by Mr. Dillingham from Mr. Dillingham's forces. He has no business to tell anybody this...Mr. Latham has always been your man, and has never worked for me, but...understand it now, that he is working for both of us, or else I do not propose to have him up there...I know you understand it perfectly, and it is not your intention that anything of this kind should be done, but evidently Mr. Latham and those around your theatre do not." The Century Theatre, built in 1909 at 62nd Street and Central Park West, was demolished in 1930; Shakespeare's The Tempest had just closed. The positions Ziegfeld was discussing with producer/theatre owner Charles B. Dillingham (1868-1934) was for The Century Girl, a play written by Victor Herbert and Irving Berlin and produced by Ziegfeld. It opened on November 6, 1916 and ran for 200 performances. The Globe Theatre was built by Dillingham in 1910. In 1957, it was renamed the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and still exists today at 205 West 46th Street. Fred G. Latham (1853-1943) was a director who worked for Dillingham. Folds, vertical fold touches "o" in Flo. Lightly creased. Overall, fine condition.
