Floyd Gibbons sends a typed letter of thanks for the hospitality
while at Hartford.
Typed Letter Signed: "Floyd Gibbons", 1p, 6½x8. No place,
1932 October 25. To Charles B. Whittelsey, Esq., Executive Vice President,
Chamber of Commerce, Hartford, Connecticut. In full: "Hope you won't mind
my calling you Charlie, Charlie, but us young felloes can't stand on ceremony,
can we Charlie? Just writing to tell you how much I appreciate the many
courtesies you extended to me during my visit to Hartford. Kindest personal
regards Yours very sincerely," Floyd Gibbons (1887-1939) was a war
correspondent and radio commentator. He earned fame from his reporting of
World War I, including a first-hand account of the sinking of the merchant ship
Laconia by a German U-Boat and a much-quoted account of U.S. Marines
in combat at Belleau Wood. In that battle Gibbons was wounded several times and
lost his eye. He wrote a biography of "the Red Baron" von Richthofen
(1927) and a novel of future war The Red Napoleon (1936), both of which
remain in print. Scalloped edges. Fold crease not near signature. Fine
condition.
