FLOYD PATTERSON
Floyd Patterson writes to a fan that he will gladly sign a pair of boxing gloves if they are
sent with a self-addressed box or envelope to send back in. He will not charge for the
signature.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Floyd", 1p, 8½x11. New Paltz, New York, 1990 January 12. On
his personal stationery to Mr. Reynolds. In full: "I received your letter regarding my signing a
pair of boxing gloves. I would be more than happy to sign and return the gloves to you. Just enclose
a self-addressed box or envelope with the return address on it. I do not charge anyone that wishes
to have my autograph. I consider it an honor. Should you care to donate to my boxing club - I
thank you - if not, I still thank you for being a friend and fan." In 1956, 21-year-old Floyd
Patterson (1935-2006) became the youngest fighter to win the World Heavyweight title
until Mike Tyson won the WBC crown in 1986 at the age of 20. Champion since 1956,
Patterson lost his title to Ingemar Johansson by a TKO in the third round, June 26, 1959. In
the June 20, 1960 rematch, Patterson KO'd Johansson in the fifth round to become the
first defeated World Heavyweight Champion to regain his title. Patterson lost his title in
1962 when Sonny Liston KO'd him in the first round. Fine condition.
