Flight Leader #88". Jernstedt served with the American Volunteer Group (AVG)
in China, the famous "Flying Tigers" (1941-1942), later absorbed into the
U.S. Air Corps. Jernstedt, who was awarded the Chinese Cloud Banner and the
Distinguished Flying Cross, later served in the Oregon state Senate. The
Flying Tigers, who were paid $600 a month and $500 a kill, destroyed 297
Japanese planes and dispelled the myth of Japan's air superiority. Fine
